Exploring how art can become a space for expression and mental health care for young people.
Art4Mind was born from a simple yet radical question: can art become an integral part of mental health care?
The project was developed by Unhate Foundation in collaboration with the Psychiatry Department of Policlinico Gemelli in Rome and the curator of 21Art, with the aim of experimenting with an integrated model that combines traditional therapy with peer-led artistic experiences.
In the first pilot workshop, four young artists — guided by contemporary artist Alfredo Pirri — spent time with young patients from the department, creating a space for expression, connection and deep listening. This encounter led to the first poetry workshop, designed as an opportunity to explore emotions, personal stories and imagination.
Throughout 2026, the project will continue with additional workshops in creative writing, photography and theatre, involving approximately 45 patients.
At the same time, Unhate Foundation is working to ensure that this model can be scientifically validated and, over time, extended to other hospital departments. The goal is to contribute to the development of innovative approaches to care, grounded in the belief that mental health also depends on the opportunity to express oneself, create and share one’s story.
